Nordstrom Named a Top Company to Work for

This month, CNNmoney listed Nordstrom as one of the top companies to work for in the United States. This ranking was based off of the company's reputation for top customer service and promotion opportunities for employees. Nordstrom, a luxury retailer based in Seattle, Washington has 115 department stores and 72 Nordstrom Rack discount outlets nationwide. With 49,447 employees, the main reasons to work there are because of the mentoring provided, the commission-based compensation that is tied to performance, the great investment in terms of their stock-purchase program, and the 20% employee discount.

I think it's great that Nordstrom is gaining recognition for being a top company to work for. I have worked at the Bellevue, Washington Nordstrom for the past three summers and it has been a great educational and job training experience. The Human Resources department takes care of each and every one of its employees. Oftentimes, the permanent sales people are promoted to Department Manager after a few years, and are able to move up in the company once they gain enough experience.

As a merchandising management major, Nordstrom has given me plenty of insight in the retail world that I can apply later on in life. Even as a seasonal employee, I had the opportunity to attend meetings with the regional and national buyers of my department. I thought it was nice that the company felt like each and every employee should feel involved with the business-aspect of things.

Being named one of the best companies to work for by CNNmoney is awesome for Nordstrom's corporate responsibility. It shows that their HR department is successfully doing their job and that employees really enjoy working for the company. The article emphasizes that employees come to Nordstrom because they want a career, not just a job.
