Food for the Hungry City Harvest

Food for the Hungry City Harvest is a company that delivers leftovers from restaurants and other businesses or houses to agencies and soup kitchens that feed the hungry and homeless. The volunteer agency started in 1982 and accepts any amount of food as a donation. Their main mission is to get people fed and each week, City Harvest makes a huge impact on more than a quarter million hungry New Yorkers. There are over 350 donors, some of which donate extra food everyday.

The efforts made by City Harvest is crucial to society, especially since they are the only company like this in New York, providing to the needy people on the streets, who otherwise would go days without any food. The things that this company is doing with volunteers, none the less, is something that more restaurants should be willing to contribute to, especially in more states. Similar organizations or programs should be made available in every state, allowing scraps from restaurants that would otherwise be thrown out, be donated to people who could really use a bit to eat.

I truly think that programs like this could be what America needs to end hunger, especially when it is something as easy as giving leftovers to soup kitchens and homeless shelters. I like the fact that City Harvest will take any amount of food as a donation. Whether it is an individual home donating their leftover casserole or a truck load from a restaurant, everything can make a difference in the life of a starving individual.

  1. I think that this is an awesome program. All of my family lives in New York and there are so many homeless people there looking for food. I feel that feeding the hungry is one of the coolest ways to give back to society.
