As the second largest discount retailer nationwide, Target consistently ranks among the top philanthropic companies in the U.S. As an employee, I've seen all the ways they give back to the community, ranging from donations from individual stores to their partnership with the United Way. Every week, Target gives 5% of its income to public schools, which adds up to about $3 million per week! Target REDCard holders also have the option of choosing a local school or educational organization to which Target will give 1% of its income. They also dontaed $1.5 millioin to the Red Cross after the occurence of hurricane Katrina.

This company intetests me because I work for them and I am surrounded by these philanthropic efforts all the time. Executives frequently discuss the importance of giving back to the community (to echo the companies philosophies, because it's their job), but until I began looking into other company's CSR, I never realized that Target is really leading the way.

  1. A strong connection to your own life! When looking at an organization's own website, be sure to also address any potential bias. What information is not there? What questions do you have? How might another source present this information differently?
