BIZ BUZZ #2: Cultural Barrier in Construction

This week I read another construction related article. This article talked about the difference in fatalities among hispanic and non hispanic workers. The author concluded that Hispanic workers are more prone to construction related injuries due to their inexperience and young age.

This article was interesting to me because I will be working in the construction industry for the rest of my career, and I believe this issue will become a reality to me someday. I think there are many imperfections within every industry that are overlooked due to their political and legal implications. Hispanic workers make up almost half of the labor market in the Western states playing a huge role in the productivity and profitability of construction projects everywhere.

Every company has a social responsibility for their employees, community, and owners. Safeguarding the safety and well being of your employees should be at the top of the list for any company. Huge companies such as Kiewitt and Skanska need to adopt pre employment safety, skills, and education training programs. If these huge contractors can reduce the amount of worker related injuries than production, profitability, and company morale will improve. Spending more time with your employees to ensure safety and success has the ability to transcend cultural barriers. All the industry needs are a couple of large scale innovators to lead the way.
